“My adult daughter cut off contact and won't tell me why”
Many estranged parents say they don't know why the child left, or that the reason given makes no sense to them. In a survey of 1,035 estranged mothers (Schoppe-Sullivan, Coleman and colleagues, Couple and Family Psychology, 2021), 79% said other family members had turned the child against them, most often the child's father or partner, and 18% saw themselves as at fault, while other research finds adult children more often name emotional abuse, clashing expectations and personality conflict. The lead author described a real disconnect between the two accounts. A Cornell national survey led by Karl Pillemer found that 27% of American adults had cut off contact with a relative, so the silence is far from rare, though that figure covers every kind of relative.
What to check first
It helps to check what the daughter has said, in her own words, even if it seems unfair or unclear, and what happened in the months before. A new partner, a move, a birth or her own mental health may play a part. If she has said what she wants, such as no contact for now, those words are worth taking at face value, apart from the question of why.
What could be going on
Estrangement from an adult child: Fits if the silence is a deliberate cutoff and the reasons you've been given, or guessed, don't add up for you.
Ambiguous loss (Boss): Check whether not knowing why, or whether she'll come back, keeps the loss from settling.
Rumination and worry: Fits if you go round and round the same scenes trying to find the reason.
Rupture and repair: Check whether there were hurts she named before, even small ones, that never got repaired.
Telling them apart
Estrangement from an adult child: The cutoff may be a decision the daughter reached over time, with reasons she gave before in ways that were hard to hear. Parents and adult children often tell very different stories about the same rift. The not knowing may partly reflect that gap.
Ambiguous loss (Boss): She is alive and absent, and there is no ending to mourn. Hope that she'll call, and fear that she won't, may swing day to day. Without a reason, the loss may not settle into grief.
Rumination and worry: The mind may circle the same scenes, birthdays, arguments, the last call, looking for the cause. It feels like working something out and seldom ends in an answer. The circling may leave the parent more drained and no clearer.
Rupture and repair: There may have been earlier hurts the daughter named, about criticism, a partner or the past, that were explained or defended more than heard. The cutoff may have come after those attempts failed. Repair, when it happens, often starts with hearing her account in full.
