Sarcastic

'Oh great, another all-hands. My favourite.' Barbs land on people, often with a smile.

Rule out first

Group culture where sarcasm is the dialect. Genuine wit that the targets enjoy. A real frustration they can't voice another way.

What could explain it

Humour (as a mature defence): It's light, includes them as a target, and lets everyone breathe; people laugh with them.

Contempt: Eye-rolls and sneers aimed at people as well as situations; recipients feel small.

Passive aggression: The sarcasm carries a complaint they won't make directly; ask, and they deny any problem.

Envy: The barbs aim at people who are doing well, especially in their own area.

Everyday sadism: They enjoy the wince; the sarcasm escalates when it hurts.

A next move

Ask directly, in private: 'it sounded like you have a problem with this; what is it?' A clear answer means frustration; denial means passive aggression; amusement at the hurt means something colder.

If it’s you

What would I have to say plainly if I couldn't be sarcastic about it?
