“I binge eat when I'm stressed”

What could be going on

Eating disorders: Repeated loss of control over eating with distress fits; check frequency and purging.

Emotion regulation: Food as a way to manage feelings fits; check which feelings come first.

Experiential avoidance: Eating may numb unwanted feelings; check what you'd feel without it.

Addiction as an attempted solution to pain (Maté): Ask what pain the eating soothes; check loneliness, boredom or stress just before a binge.

Shame: Shame after binges often feeds the next one; check that cycle.

Ego depletion: Tired evenings drain restraint; check whether it's mostly at night.

Questions to carry

  1. Right before the last binge, what had happened, and what was I feeling?
  2. Who in my life could I tell about the eating, and what would I want from them?
