Enneagram Type 1: Reformer

Also called Perfectionist, One, E1

Core fear: being bad, corrupt or defective. Core desire: to be good, right and in integrity; the passion (Ichazo, Naranjo) is anger, held down and leaking out as resentment and criticism.

What drives it

Constant self-correction keeps the feared badness out of view, and the anger the One will not admit to feeling turns into righteous standards for everyone else. Under stress (toward Four) they become moody, self-pitying and convinced no one appreciates how hard they try; healthy, they are principled, fair, wise and able to relax and enjoy without guilt (toward Seven).

How it shows

Work

Red-pens other people's documents unasked; 'It's not about me, it's just the right way to do it'; tight jaw, clipped tone, irritation over small errors. Reliable, ethical, the person who fixes the process; also the one who micro-manages, can't delegate and quietly keeps score of who cut corners.

Relationships

Loves by improving you: corrections offered as care. Partners feel monitored and never quite good enough; the One feels unappreciated for carrying the household's standards. Pleasure and play arrive only after the work is done, which it never is.

Self

A running inner critic that says 'should' all day, a body that rarely unclenches, and anger that you describe as 'just frustrated' or 'disappointed'. You feel virtuous for doing the right thing and resentful that others don't.

What tells it apart

Enneagram Type 6: Loyalist: The One is certain what is right and argues from internal principle; the Six doubts, checks with authority or the group, and argues from 'what could go wrong'. Ask 'How do you know?': the One cites a standard, the Six cites a risk or a person.

Enneagram Type 3: Achiever: Both are driven and polished; the One will do the right thing even when no one sees or rewards it, while the Three's standard shifts with the audience and what will look successful.

Obsessive-compulsive personality (OCPD): OCPD is a diagnosable rigidity that impairs work and relationships; a One can be moderately healthy, flexible under pressure and self-aware of the critic, with the same underlying style.

A test

Watch for anger the person denies: if irritation is visibly present but named as 'disappointment' or justified by a principle, and they cannot rest until things are corrected, the One hypothesis holds.

A type here is a guess to check. In the tradition Gurdjieff began, an accurate read comes from a teacher who has watched us closely over time, not from a description we pick for ourselves. More on the Enneagram

Questions to carry

  1. When irritation shows, what does the person call it, and how soon must things be put right?
  2. Where does my unadmitted anger go, and which rules for other people does it turn into?

How strong the research is

weak. Type scales correlate with conscientiousness and the description overlaps obsessive-compulsive personality, but the type as a discrete category has little empirical support; the portrait is clinical and literary.
