“My family only gets in touch when they want money”
What could be going on
I–It (Buber): Fits if you are approached for what you provide, not who you are.
Psychological entitlement: Could be a belief they are owed your help; check reactions when you refuse.
Emotional blackmail (fear, obligation, guilt): Check whether refusals bring threats, guilt or talk of family duty.
Codependency: Fits if paying gives you worth or relief, making it hard to stop.
Boundaries: Check whether you have a clear limit; without one, requests usually grow.
Financial enabling: Fits if your giving keeps them from facing their own money problems, and you give out of guilt or worry.
Financial dependence: Could be that they rely on you and can't picture managing without it. Check whether they've ever had to.
Questions to carry
- How did the request come the last time they asked, and what came before it?
