Lies easily without discomfort
They tell a client the product is 'already live in three markets' when it isn't, hold eye contact, and don't flinch when you raise it afterwards.
Rule out first
Sales cultures where puffery is normal and expected. A small social lie that spares feelings. Whether you misheard or they genuinely believe it.
What could explain it
Impression management: The lies are small, social and self-flattering, and they're mildly embarrassed when caught.
Substance addiction: The lies cluster around time, money and whereabouts, the things that would expose a habit.
Compartmentalisation: They run separate lives (an affair, a hidden debt) and each compartment is internally honest; they don't feel they're lying.
Machiavellianism: Lies are planned and targeted to gain advantage; they're careful, consistent, and adjust the story by audience.
Psychopathy: No anxiety even when caught red-handed; they shrug, tell a new lie, or charm their way past it. Lies about trivial things too.
A next move
Catch one small, checkable lie and name it plainly. Embarrassment points to ordinary face-saving; a careful re-spin to calculation; a shrug and a fresh lie to something colder; defensiveness about one area of life to a hidden habit or second life.
If it’s you
Where in my life does the story I tell differ from what happened, and do I still notice the gap?
