Negativity bias

Also called bad is stronger than good, negativity dominance

Negative information, events and emotions carry more weight than positive ones of equal size. One bad act shifts an impression more than one good act.

What drives it

Missing a threat used to cost more than missing an opportunity. In judging people, a single moral lapse is treated as highly diagnostic of character, while good behaviour is assumed to be normal or strategic.

How it shows

Work

One public mistake defines a manager's reputation for years. In feedback, one critical comment outweighs ten positive ones in the recipient's memory. A reference with a single reservation sinks a candidate. Bad news about colleagues travels faster than good.

Relationships

Gottman found stable couples have roughly five positive exchanges for every negative one during conflict; one harsh remark can erase a good weekend. Someone who betrays once is never trusted again, while years of reliability earn little credit.

Self

You replay the one criticism from an otherwise good review. With others, notice when one incident is doing all the work in your impression ('after what he did at the offsite...').

What tells it apart

Mental filter: Mental filter comes with a low or anxious mood and leaves only the negative in view; negativity bias is universal, present in good moods too, and shows as unequal weighting rather than exclusive focus.

Negative sentiment override: Negative sentiment override is specific to one relationship, where history makes even neutral acts read as hostile; negativity bias is general and applies to strangers too.

Negativity/pessimism schema: The negativity schema is a lasting personal expectation that things will go wrong; negativity bias is species-wide, so seeing it in someone tells you little about them in particular.

A test

List what you know for and against a person and see whether your overall verdict matches the balance or is set by the single worst item.

Questions to carry

  1. If everything known for and against this person were laid side by side, which single item is setting the overall view?
  2. Which one bad moment with someone still outweighs years of ordinary decency in how I think of them?
