Narrative identity

Also called life story model, redemption and contamination sequences

The internalised, evolving story a person tells about how they came to be who they are and where their life is going, which gives unity and purpose.

What drives it

It integrates past, present and future and makes sense of suffering. It shapes how people interpret new events and what they think they can do next.

How it shows

Work

Founder stories that turn early hardship into a mission ('getting fired was the best thing that happened to me'); people who describe their careers as a series of setbacks caused by others; leaders who tell the same origin story at every offsite. Redemption stories (bad turns good) predict resilience; contamination stories (good turns bad) predict depression.

Relationships

How couples tell the story of how they met; how adult children describe their parents. Changes in the story often mark changes in the relationship.

Self

Notice the stories you tell about your life: who is the agent, whether bad events lead somewhere, and whether the story has changed in the last few years.

What tells it apart

Life script: A life script in Transactional Analysis is an early, unconscious plan that drives repetitive outcomes; narrative identity is the conscious, revisable story. Ask whether the person can change the story or only repeats it.

Self-concept clarity: Self-concept clarity is how clear the person is about traits now; narrative identity is how they explain becoming who they are. Someone can be clear about their traits with an incoherent story.

Post-traumatic growth: Post-traumatic growth is actual change after trauma; a redemptive narrative can be told without change in behaviour. Look for evidence beyond the story.

A test

Ask the person to tell the story of a low point and how it fits in their life, and listen for agency and whether bad events lead anywhere.

Questions to carry

  1. Telling the story of a low point, where does it lead, and who is doing anything in it?
  2. How does the low point in my own story end when I tell it, and who decided that ending?

How strong the research is

moderate. Coded features of life stories, such as redemption, agency and coherence, predict wellbeing and generativity over time; much of the work is correlational and culturally specific to Western, especially American, settings.

Where it comes from

Dan McAdams, 1985; McAdams and colleagues, 2001 (redemption and contamination).
