DARVO
A response to being held to account: Deny the behaviour, Attack the person raising it, and Reverse Victim and Offender so the accused becomes the wronged party.
What drives it
It shifts the conversation from what was done to who is being harmed by the accusation, which protects the accused's standing and often silences the accuser. Experiments show it makes observers find the real victim less credible.
How it shows
Work
A business dispute: a supplier misses delivery and invoices anyway. Confronted, the owner says the shipment arrived (deny), says your procurement team is incompetent and known for squeezing vendors (attack), then says he is being bullied by a bigger company and will tell the industry (reverse). Internally: an executive accused of harassment issues a statement about a 'malicious campaign' against him.
Relationships
'I never said that. You're the one who's always screaming. Honestly, I'm the one who should be upset, you're making me out to be a monster.' The person who raised the issue ends up apologising.
Self
When criticised, notice whether you jump to their flaws, or to how hurt you are at being criticised, before checking whether they're right.
What tells it apart
Gaslighting: DARVO is triggered by an accusation and runs its course in one exchange; gaslighting is a sustained campaign against someone's perception, with or without any accusation.
Narcissistic rage: Narcissistic rage is an outburst at an injury to self-image; DARVO is a structured sequence that ends with the accused claiming victim status, and can be done coolly, even in a written statement.
Projection: Projection attributes your own disowned trait to the other; DARVO may use projection in the attack, but its signature is the final reversal of who is the victim.
A test
A wrongly accused person also denies and may be angry, but engages with the specifics and the evidence; with DARVO the conversation ends up about the accused's suffering, not about what happened.
Questions to carry
- After the behaviour was raised, how long did the talk stay on what happened before it moved to the accused's hurt?
- When someone holds me to account, how quickly does my own hurt become the main subject?
How strong the research is
moderate. Measured and tested experimentally since 2017, mostly by Freyd's group; findings are consistent but the base is still small.
