“My employee does the bare minimum”

What could be going on

Does the minimum: Fits exactly; check whether it is new or how they have always worked.

Disengagement and quiet quitting: Quiet quitting fits if they stopped after a change, slight or broken promise.

Organisational justice: Fits if they feel underpaid, overlooked or unfairly treated.

Burnout: Fits if the minimum is all they have left; check for exhaustion.

Self-determination theory: Fits if the job gives them little autonomy, mastery or connection.

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation: Check whether anything in the work interests them, or only pay keeps them.

Questions to carry

  1. When did the effort drop, and what changed for this person around that time?
  2. Which of my own feelings about effort and fairness show up when I look at their work?
