Behaviour · Closeness and distance

Tests you

They cancel at the last minute to see if you'll still turn up next time, or tell you something confidential to see whether it leaks.

Rule out first

Reasonable caution after real betrayal. Due diligence in business. A new relationship where trust hasn't been earned yet.

What could explain it

Mistrust/abuse schema: They expect to be hurt. Passing one test only leads to another; nothing settles it.

Protest behaviour: The test asks 'do you love me?' and they settle once you pass.

Transference: The tests are for someone else: they're checking whether you'll do what a past betrayer did.

Psychological games (Berne): The test is built so you fail, and ends in 'I knew you'd do that'.

Abandonment/instability schema: The tests are about whether you'll leave; they'd rather provoke the exit than wait for it.

A next move

Pass one test openly and see whether the tests stop, carry on, or escalate.

If it’s you

What am I testing for, and is there anything they could do that would convince me?
