Polished image, nothing underneath
Their LinkedIn, their story and their meeting manner are flawless, but after a year you know nothing about what they actually feel or want.
Rule out first
Professional reserve. A private person who keeps work and life apart. Roles that demand constant performance.
What could explain it
Persona: A healthy role: they drop it with friends or family, and you can sometimes see them do it.
Masking (camouflaging): The performance is effortful and exhausting; they're drained after social time and may be autistic or otherwise neurodivergent.
False self (Winnicott): There's no backstage even for them: ask what they want and the answer is what they think they should want.
Enneagram Type 3: Achiever: The image is tied to success and adapts to what wins; they're genuinely unsure who they are without it.
Self-monitoring: They shift easily and without strain to fit each room, and don't feel inauthentic about it.
Marketing orientation (Fromm): The self is tuned to what's in demand: talk of 'personal brand' and 'positioning', views that track the audience, and nothing they value about themselves that the market wouldn't pay for.
A next move
Ask about something with no right answer: a failure, a preference, a fear. A pause and a real answer means persona; distress means masking; blankness or a polished reply means false self or image-driven identity.
If it’s you
Who am I when nobody's watching, and do I know?
