Behaviour · Closeness and distance

Overshares early

First coffee, and they tell you about the divorce, the therapy and their father's drinking.

Rule out first

Cultures or circles where this openness is normal. A recent crisis that is leaking. A setting that invited it, such as a retreat.

What could explain it

Boundaries: They overshare with everyone, not just you, and don't track who knows them how well.

Anxious-preoccupied attachment: The disclosure seeks closeness fast and is followed by checking whether you still like them.

ADHD in adults: It's impulsive and they're embarrassed later. Other impulsive signs are present.

Love bombing: Aimed at you, it builds an instant special bond and comes with flattery and talk of the future together.

Histrionic personality: The telling is dramatic and draws an audience; the story is vivid but the feeling seems thin.

A next move

Offer a small, proportionate disclosure back. Do they take interest in yours, push for more intimacy, or move on to the next audience?

If it’s you

What was I hoping they'd do with what I told them?
