Mood swings day to day

Warm on Monday, icy on Tuesday, tearful on Wednesday, and you can't work out why.

Rule out first

Hormones, sleep, pain, illness. A hard situation at home. Events at work you don't know about.

What could explain it

Substance addiction: Mood follows drinking or using: worse on Mondays and mornings, better after a drink.

Borderline personality: Swings follow relationship events, especially any hint of rejection, and shift within hours.

Bipolar disorder and hypomania: Moods last days to weeks, with matching shifts in sleep and energy, not hour to hour.

Rejection sensitive dysphoria: Sudden drops after a perceived criticism, quick to come and quick to pass, alongside ADHD signs.

Emotional dysregulation: Big reactions to many triggers, slow to settle, with insight and often regret afterwards.

A next move

Keep a simple note of when the swings happen and what came before. Relationship events, substances, criticism or multi-day episodes each point a different way.
