Can't be alone

Always on the phone, always booked, a new partner within weeks of a break-up.

Rule out first

High extraversion. A recent loss that makes solitude painful for now. A living situation where solitude is rare and unfamiliar.

What could explain it

Extraversion: They enjoy company; solitude bores them but doesn't distress them.

Experiential avoidance: Alone, feelings arrive, so they keep moving. Distraction is the goal, not company; a screen does as well as a person.

Dependent personality: They need others to decide and to look after them; alone, they freeze over ordinary choices.

Abandonment/instability schema: Being alone feels like being left; they stay in relationships that are bad for them.

Borderline personality: Solitude brings chronic emptiness and sometimes impulsive or self-harming acts.

A next move

Ask what happens in the first hour after everyone leaves. Boredom is extraversion; a rush of feeling is avoidance; not knowing how to cope is dependence; emptiness or self-harm needs proper care.

If it’s you
