Big, theatrical emotions that shift fast
Tears in the meeting, laughter ten minutes later, and a story told so vividly that everyone stops what they're doing.
Rule out first
An expressive culture or family. A creative or performance profession. A real crisis that justifies the emotion.
What could explain it
Extraversion: Expressive but grounded: the feeling fits the event and they're easy to be around.
Histrionic personality: The emotion gathers attention, shifts fast, and feels shallow; they're uncomfortable when not the focus.
Borderline personality: The emotion is intense and painful, often about relationships or abandonment, and slow to settle.
ADHD in adults: Quick to react, quick to recover, alongside impulsiveness and distractibility.
Bipolar disorder and hypomania: Emotions shift with longer episodes of high energy and low mood, not hour to hour.
A next move
Notice what happens when attention moves elsewhere. Calm means extraversion or ADHD; escalation means histrionic; despair means borderline; check for episodes lasting days.
